

South Africans Show Heart

In the past two weeks, people from all walks of life have heeded a call to action, sent out by Health and Social Development MEC Qedani Mahlangu and Lead SA, to volunteer at public hospitals that have been affected by the public sector strike currently gripping South Africa.
We talked to Geraldine from Roodeport , who felt she had to heed the call to action because she felt empathetic towards the patients plight at Helen Joseph Public hospital in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.

This surge of volunteerism in South Africa has re-instated the spirit of ubuntu that was witnessed during the 2010 Fifa World Cup™. South Africa has never witnessed such selflessness and generosity.
We spoke to Doris Mhlongo, a cleaner by profession, who (for the first time) spent her Saturday volunteering at Helen Joseph Public hospital in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.

All volunteers have been taking it upon themselves and their groups to get to a public hospital nearest to their homes and helping out in any way they can. From food preparation, ward cleaning and laundry service, they have lifted their sleeves and put their souls in it.
