South Africans' enthusiastic expression of solidarity and national pride during the 2010 Fifa World Cup is set to continue with the launch of Brand South Africa's Fly the Flag Fridays campaign. The campaign has already been endorsed by South African President Jacob Zuma, in a speech delivered the day after the final whistle of the tournament was blown. "The Football Fridays campaign became highly successful," he said. "South Africans from all walks of life proudly wore national colours every Friday. It was a meaningful collective experience of a lifetime.
Government is working on a programme to thank South Africans and to harness this spirit of a common nationhood and social cohesion."
Now that the World Cup is over, Brand South Africa is urging the people of the country to keep the momentum going, turning Football Fridays into Fly the Flag Fridays. South Africans are encouraged to wear colours of their flag, to keep flying the flag on their vehicles and at their homes and offices, and to embrace the spirit created during Africa's full-colour World Cup.
Here's how to keep the flag flying:
- Every Friday, wear the colours of South Africa's flag, or the shirt of one of our national teams – Bafana Bafana, the Springboks, the Proteas …
- Fly the flag in your home and office
- Buy South African goods to help create jobs and grow our economy
- Once a month, give an hour (or more) of your time to helping other people
Through unity, inspired by a common vision and purpose, we walk together as a nation to build a meaningful and sustainable South African legacy.
"By continuing to stand together, there is nothing we cannot do," says Miller Matola, chief executive of Brand South Africa. "As our visitors go home, let us remind them to keep coming back to South Africa because we are a nation proud of its achievements, and a country that is open for business."
